Learn to Fly

We are a Part 61 Flight School with Certified Flight Instructors on staff to help you achieve your Recreational or Private Pilot's license, or add your instrument rating. A relaxed atmosphere adds to our students' comfort and enjoyment.

Al "Cappy" Schultz - Flight School Director

Al received his "Private Pilot" license in 1967 and was drafted into the Navy in 1968. In 1969, he attended Naval flight training at Pensacola, Florida. After 6 months of primary training in the T34 Mentor, Al elected to opt out of the Naval Flight Training program for the Civilian VA Flight Training. He completed his Navy career with the Blue Angels when they were at home and not traveling and he was a rescue medic for the various aviation training units in the Pensacola area.

Al has 40 years of aviation experience and has been instructing in the area since 1972. He has been instructing here at River Aviation since 2004.

With his calm approach, experience, and love for flying, Al can make your flight training an enjoyable experienceso you'll feel confident about taking the controls and becoming a pilot.

Private Pilot
This license will give you more freedom in your flying, as you will be able to fly day or night without a distance restriction, in good weather. The FAA requires a minimum of 40 logged hours of flight time (logged means endorsed by a Certified Flight Instructor ("CFI") for the Private Pilot License. It is rare that someone completes the course in 40 hours and generally takes 60 to 70 hours. (National Statistics)
We use the Jeppesen Private Pilot's Curriculum with home study Ground School. If more intensive training is needed, we offer a Ground School one night a week for 14 weeks. You may also work one-on-one with your instructor.

Recreational Pilot

This lesson is primarily for someone who wishes to fly purely for recreation. You are limited to fly within 50 Nautical Miles of your base airport and may only fly between sunrise and sunset, in good weather. The FAA requires a minimum of 30 hours logged with a Certified Flight Instructor ("CFI"), 15 hours of dual instruction, and 3 hours of solo time. As with the Private Pilot's certificate, it is rare when someone completes the course with just the minimum requirements.
